Statement of Purpose

The Brookline Recorded Vote Coalition seeks recorded votes in Town Meeting on issues that are both important and contested. Recording of significant votes helps voters in holding Town Meeting members accountable. (Because Brookline has a representative form of Town Meeting, those who are elected to Town Meeting have a constituency whom they represent) Recorded Town Meeting votes are available to the public on the Town’s web site.

In Town Meeting, votes are recorded only when at least 35 members support a request for a recorded vote. The Coalition is attentive to issues that may deserve recorded votes and seeks the necessary number of supporters when its members believe that a vote should be recorded.

Members of the Coalition participate in an e-mail discussion prior to Town Meeting that seeks to identify the issues that merit a recorded vote. A summary report of the Coalition’s discussion is sent by e-mail to all Town Meeting members prior to Town Meeting. Members of the coalition are not under any obligation to support any particular call for a recorded vote.

All Town Meeting members are invited to join the Coalition. Town Meeting members can join the Coalition by contacting Frank Caro: frank.g.caro@gmail.com or calling him at 617 739 9228.
